Scientific Purpose :

The main purpose is to provide an appropriate training  to doctoral students whose research topic belongs to theoretical, applied or experimental mechanics as well as to civil engineering, within Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, and Science Faculties, and also to encourage scientific communication and collaboration between the doctoral students of all Belgian universities. The Graduate School is also meant to provide a starting point for the integration of the doctoral students within the international scientific community. Moreover  it will contribute to enhance existing collaborations between the various institutions and to develop new such collaborations. It is globally tending to a better unification of the various aspects of Mechanics and Civil Engineering and to gathering into a single community, researchers which are usually spread out among many different Departments.

Research Themes :

All the research topics of the GraSMech teams are related to theoretical, computational        and experimental mechanics as well as to civil engineering, with an emphasis on the engineering aspects. The scientific field covered is extremely wide. Within this field, eleven different areas of importance for GraSMech are identified:

1. solid mechanics, vibrations and acoustics;
2. fluid mechanics;
3. material processing;
4. rheology;
5. applied thermodynamics and heat transfer;
6. biomechanics;
7. programming aspects and computing;
8. structural mechanics;
9. geomaterials mechanics;
10. construction materials;
11. transport and logistics. 

Computational methods play a major role in most of the research topics of the GraSMech teams. Applications to industrial problems are important.
